Question 4

The nature of roots of the quadratic equation 9x2 – 6x – 2 = 0 is:

(a) No real roots

(b) 2 equal real roots

(c) 2 distinct real roots

(d) More than 2 real roots

Explanation :

To determine the nature of the roots of the quadratic equation  9x^2 - 6x - 2 = 0 , we need to calculate the discriminant  b^2 - 4ac

where a = 9 , b = -6 and c= -2 when we compare with  ax^2 + bx +c = 0

Discriminant = b^2 - 4ac = (-6)^2 - 4 x (9) x (-2)

=> 36 -(-72) = 36+ 72

=> 108

Since the discriminant is positive (108>0), the quadratic equation has two distinct real roots.

So, the correct option is: ?
